Day 15: Time flies

Oh-my..it's the 15th already.

Time is running out.

We should cherish every moment
we have left.

Just finished inking the first chapter
pages.

Shall scan them tomorrow and lay them out.
Standby....

Day 14: Back

Ahh... finally got back. Had a cold shower.
Jumped to the drawing board and did pencils
for the following pages. Still haven't
gotten myself to ink any of the pages yet.

Inking is the most delicate part for me.
I can't just jumped into it and do them.
Throughout the years, I've learned
to carefully craft my art.

Sigh. Feeling really depressed of so many things
lately.

The damn weather is not helping either.

Bloody gloomy.

Sigh.

Day 13: Journey

I went to a road trip with a few friends today.
Sadly it wasn't a holiday. It was to see our dear
friend, Jordan. To send him off. To say goodbye.

I shivered a little as I approached his casket
to see him for the last time.

He was still smiling.

I'm in a motel now. Luckily they had wi-fi here.

No mood to write or elaborate any further.

Here are the final strips I have.

Got to come up with something tomorrow.

-chinyew

Jordan Tan RIP

Music with Jordan

the tragic death of Madam Kurosawa

the ball dancer with chains.wav

Day 12: Friend.

JORDAN TAN

Jordan is always smiling. He look exactly like this :)
24/7 without fail.

I shared many good memories with him.

If I was to start writing all about it,
it could take months.

I'll try and break it down as I go.

We started out working in the industry
together.

He was the guy that helped me to do CG on
my first television directing.
Wasn't for him and his effects, the channel
wouldn't have noticed me.

He took a 8 hours bus just to helped me with the effects
in my crampy room for 2 days straight.

(Jordan working in my crampy room.)

He quit the industry at his highest peak because
he was a nice person and he couldn't stand the politics that was going
on in the industry. He also loved and missed his family.
And so he packed his bags, left Kuala Lumpur and headed
back to his hometown to live a quiet life with his family.
The day I sent him off, deep down inside, I thought I knew,
he would come back. He would come back.

But he didn't.

_______________________________________

Art and CG had always been his true love.
During the day, he'll help his dad with the business,
and at night he'll research and polish his CG skills.

Pixel-Samurai.

He never gave up.

Everytime I asked him for favors to do CG,
I would promise him that one day, the station will
appreciate good quality stuff, and they will start
paying us more. I promised him I would change
the industry by showing them what we got for them.
He just smiled and looked at me,

"I'll only do CG for director Chin Yew."

I called him yesterday for another project.
A project which I no longer keen about.
Because I've given up on television.

I told him,

"Jordan, you don't have to do me any favor for this
project, cause I don't even care if this turn out
shit, and at the same time, I don't want to
underpay you."

He agreed.

That very same night, he suddenly passed away.

The following morning the producer of the project called me
and offered me a really ridiculous price for the project.
I rejected it.

I don't want to do it without Jordan.
Especially not at that ridiculous price the industry
is constantly giving us. I've had it. No longer I want to be bullied.

Now thinking back of our last conversation,
I wonder was he disappointed at my change and lack
of enthusiasm for the industry.

(Jordan did all the CG that helped me shine)
_______________________________________

I and Jordan also shared a same problem; no luck with girls.
I remember cruising at his hometown in his car, repeating
a mandarin poppy love track by S.H.E, again and again.
That was our little secret, because we presented ourselves
as rock guys. Heh.

Another night, long time ago, I and him suddenly
had the urge to listen to jazz, so we went to a jazz club.
It was very nice place; good food, good music, good
atmosphere. So I told him,

"Jordan, one day when I and you got a girlfriend,
we are gonna bring them here."

He smiled back.

_______________________________________

We also play music together and share similar music taste.
We are always trading and introducing new music to one another.

Music with Jordan.

Jordan comes down to KL once in awhile for projects and rock gigs.
The last time, I saw him, was outside my house.
We said our goodbyes as we normally do. But this time,
he was really happy for me, because I've finally found
a girlfriend. Recalling those last moments, it really
sounded like our final goodbyes. We hug and shake
hands.

We like to call each other "friend" in a unique tone.

"Hey friend, take care and farewell."

I'll always remember you, Jordan Tan.

(Me and my hoh peng you!)

Jordan's 30dayartist run: NOVEMBER 2006

as we grow older, people around us slowly dies. their death sort of forces us to grow up.

life is so fragile. health is so far important compared to career. i'm not gonna waste my health on not worthy projects anymore. Jordan Tan, your passing is a wake up call to me. Thank you for helping me so much in my career. I owe what I got now mos

RIDICULOUS! RM8K to direct and write a telemovie! Day by day the industry is going to hell because of these producers...

Day 11: Rest

Ah... the shoot is finally over.

My body aches. Went for a foot massage today.
Relaxing. Came back home. Slept.
My body is retrieving from all the sleep
it has been missing.

Here are the strips for today:

And..... I worked on this book's illustration a couple months
back. It's a book written by Amir Muhammad. The process
was quite tiring too. At day, I was working in the tv production
company, and at night I was communicating with the
writer through gmail to discuss about the drawings. And
once we agreed, I proceed to illustrating them
through out the night, till the morning,
and back to my tv production work.
Where was my sleeping time? For that month, I couldn't
remember. All I could recall was snippets of sleep
anytime-anywhere.

Here's a book flip video I made of the book:

ROJAK - BOOK FLIP from chinyew on Vimeo.

Projects can be crazy.
You like it, you want it, you take it.
You sort of forgets whether your body could take it.
It's only after the rush and adrenaline is over,
you realized that you have been stretching your body too far.

And then rest.....

till tomorrow.

Day 10: together

life is good. we help one another.
today in shoot, everyone was very supportive
to one another.

everybody loves one another.

i love you.

and things go on and on.

we a;; stay and watch.

semi-clear of the instructions?

we clear for whoever and whenever.

because life, i feel; it's about together.

last day of shoot, and it went well,
and wrapped early.

Day 9: Blame

There's a chinese saying,

"those who eat salted fish, should have known the thirst."

my way of describing it is;

when you eat chilli, don't complain it being spicy.

i was blame for something i didn't do today.
but it wasn't a major screw-up.

i just don't like the idea to be blame wrongly.
i like defending.

but today, in the job, for the job, i learn to bite the bullet.

just give in. compared to the tv, i don't mind
biting it. even to the point, swallowing it.
because this is commercial, and we're dealing with
high integrity pros here.

putting that aside, for today, i had great opportunity to shine.
the scene we were shooting was with the local malay
children, which was my expertise since i've been working
with children for so long.

it went well, the korean director kept insisting me to direct
the kids for him. it means alot to be trusted and given
a task by the top chain.

tomorrow's last day of the shoot.

i'm praying really hard no major screw up.

sigh. wednesday back to the !@%^&@# budget television.
i know it'll be difficult for me to cope up with the contrast
intensity. example, my producers will be presenting
me the cast for the telemovie i'll be directing. Usually,
in commercial, we must print out the photos in color
and lay out carefully to present to the director.

i wonder what my Malaysian television producer will prepare for me.

i feel like demanding, (but at the same time,
the television side of me reminds me)

why bother?

Day 8: confidence

day 1 of shoot went pretty well..

a little hipcups in the morning
and a little delay.

but i feel the team is coming to grasp.

tomorrow will be a smooth one i predict.

after finishing day 1 of assist directing
a 35mm shoot, I feel it's almost similar
of I directing my video television shows.

I've always had the pressure and fear to
roll 35mm. Reason being it's expensive
and exclusive.

After years being away from commercial,
coming back with my new trained and confidence
of directing television, I feel I can do it.

So this is what I recommend to enthusiast film maker
out there; go and be a PA for a commercial house.
Once you got the experience and confidence, jump
to the lame ass television people. You can easily
tackle them even though you are a production assistant.
Most people in television dunno jack shit about production.
The most ironic are the producers! Producer comes from the
word 'produce' of 'production'. they lack of knowledge
of crafting out the visual experience into a product.

You can quickly work your way up to directing.
Most television directors (in Malaysia) are
half pass jack ass too.

Once you have given that damn industry a low esteem
of themselves, go back to commercial, and try to
work up again.

Cause in the end, you'll feel that all production
are the same. The only difference is whether which
league you wanna play in.

Here are the strips for today:

Day 7: Ready

Another crazy day of recce.

Last minute one of the location pulled out.

The team was very stressful and had to find a backup.

Thank God we found it.

The adrenaline was pumping really fast in the office.

Lots of last minute preparation, since this is a last minute
job that came in.

Don't think many producers could have pulled out this
project as how my current producer has done it.

Amazing.

I feel deeply honored and gratitude of working with him
and his team, and the Korean team.

Tomorrow is day 1 of shoot.

I've done my full preparation (i think) for tomorrow's shoot.

So excited to roll my first 35mm project.

They say First Assistant Director is the captain of the team.

I'm the captain.

Let's roll!

Day 6: Late

Woke up half hour late today.

Sped like crazy!

Thank God I reached the hotel safely and on time
to pick up the Director.

We shot some still cityscapes today.

Went to some schools for scouting.

Glad that the Korean teams have decided on the location.

I officially start working crazily from today onwards.

It's my job to make sure every thing is on time.

From talent, to wardrobe, to art department, props,
technical and location.

Don't wanna have heart attack at early age?

Stay away from commercial production.

Anyway, here are the strips for today.

Be patient, 4 more days to go, and I'll be back
to the drawing board.

Day 5 : Kisses

Oh-man..

Woke up at 530.

Today was recce day.

Went to many places.

Hours spent in traveling.

Went to the outskirts of Malaysia.

Never knew villages like that existed.

The shoot I'm doing revolves staging a Laos, Africa
and South America scene.

This makes me feel, that the whole world is quite similar
in a way. Everywhere can look like anywhere.

Anyway, it's 230am now. My call time at the production
house is 530am. It's a crazy life. But I love it.

I'm rolling film. And it's a Korean director I'm working for.

I love korean films.

:_

(wish I could get some kisses now.)

Here are the strips:

Day 4: Nothing

Yep, you've guessed it, nothing.

Woke up, did 2 pages. Then as was about to ink,
a commercial production house called.

As of now, I'm currently prepping for this
Samsung commercial shoot that is on Sunday till
Tuesday. Korean director, which I'll be assisting.

It's gonna be tight for any more pages till Tuesday.

But rest assure, I've got many comic strips which
I've done in the past that has not been seen
or published by anyone.

So all the way till Tuesday, I'll posting them.

Remember: Is not that I'm lazy or slacking, I'm
really into completing my graphic novel.
Completing it is one of my ambition.

But shooting a korean commercial is a big break for
me.

And I'm gonna take it.

Damn, I've got less than 3 hours to sleep
before the next day starts again...

Till then...

gear 4!

Day 3: Sad day

Artist tend to be very emotional beings.
Highly sensitive. Highly egoistic.

That's why we do art.

We manifest our feelings into art.

We tell stories of how we feel.

Just finished reading David Mazzucchelli's Asterios Polyp.
Very much tells the relationships an artist would have.
The psychology and communication problem they have.

Woke up early this morning to work on more pencils.
Finished another 10 pages. Will work on the final 3 tomorrow
of the scene, then will ink them in a go.

Heading out for a cigarette break.
It's been a long day.

-chinyew

a very tough choice whether i should go for Smashing Pumpkins, critical timing, and hate traveling alone.

liar.

Monday, August 02, 2010

Day 2: Naked.

woke up early this morning to work on the pages.

finished penciling 7 pages.

then had to go to the production house to
work on some video editing. not episodes that
I've directed though. that's my job most
of the time; cleaning up for people.

reached home, after meal, watch episodes of Weeds
and Entourage. Shower. Then started working on
more pencils. Finished 3 more.

I'm planning to ink the first scene in a go.

So guys gotto wait till I finish them and I'll
post the 1st scene.

Meanwhile here are the pencils that I've finished.

I rarely and feel very uncomfortable to show people
my originals and pencils, but I guess since you'll here
and you definitely want to see atleast something rite?

well-here:

really love Entourage S6 EP5! fav scene; Sasha Grey and pancakes!

Back for the Sixth time at 30dayartist.com

Sunday, August 01, 2010

Yeah, WEEDS is back! Season 6 Ep 1...!!!

Day 01 - Back for the sixth time.

Hi, I'm Chin Yew.

and I'm back for the sixth time.

Since last year, my film production career
has been slowly invading into my art career.

Despite it all,
2009-2010 has been a great year for my art career.
Got nominated for several awards.
Got a couple of good gigs, which I'll be sharing
through out the month.

Was suppose to take a self-portrait picture
of myself with the same purple painting like
I do every year (well except for last year's,
which I wanted it to be a little weird with
myself being invisible) but didn't had time.

Probably gonna get someone to take it for me
tomorrow.

Woke up really early this morning, even skipped church,
and cut the traditional anniversary 30dayartist video.
Later at afternoon, went for a shoot.
It was the last day of the children show that I've
been working on for almost 3 years.

I love the project and the kids,
I just don't like the station people who
are handling it.

And so I sworn that this season will be my last.

I've got big plans for 2011. Which I'll share
with you all the coming days ahead.

It's been 5 years since I made that big leap to
change my life. I always hear people saying that
we change every 5 years.

I'm hitting 30 next year, and I think it's
time for the 2nd big leap in my life.

This might be my last 'art' 30dayartist run.

As I said earlier, my film production life
has been slowly invading to my other half career.
I got back really late today. So no pages yet
for I SEE SO MANY BUTTERFLIES VOL.2 PART 2.

But I guarantee you, tomorrow you will see some.
That's if the film production house doesn't
call me.

I also guarantee you that I'll be wrapping-up
I SEE SO MANY BUTTERFLIES.

This is the end.

I also would like to thank all the 30dayartists!

Here's the anniversary video.

Happy 5th year everyone!

Love,

Chin Yew.
