Day 151: Choices

Life is full of choices.
Is when you still get to choose,
you are fortunate and bless.

Most people are lack of choices.

I feel thankful that I still do.

End of 2010 has been a really tough
and mystery to me of what's ahead.

2011. I'm waiting for it.

30. Hitting the big 3 and dropping the 2.

Shall bravely embrace my age as an artist.

Cross away thoughts of should I have made
it, or still on the way.

Am glad the least that I'm still here to decide.

Don't really like hiphop or r&b but Rootz DJ and Mc is pretty good! Love how they juggle and mix the songs.

Day 150: New New

Got up and worked on some corporate video
jobs. It's been awhile since I touched Flash.

Got another call today regarding another
corporate jobs.

I don't like corporate works.

I want shows. Storytelling.

Anyway, days are counting since I last
directed anything.

Now just hope that commercial comes in.

Wohoo! New year! New! New!

Day 149: Forgot

It's been a long time since I last forgotten to post.

Guess, there's just too many things on my plate
lately. Relationship. Career move. Family. Friends.
Health. Financial. Datelines. Projects.

All sort just rushed into me.

As an artist, I sort of lost the touch.

Just did a couple more commission portraits.
I never do portraits.

But I guess you have to do whatever you
need to do to survive.

Might even work on a website project.

Day 148: Head hurts

Facing the com.

Working on projects.

Various ones.

Heartache.

Focus.

Can't tell anymore.

Day 146: Holiday mood

Was in a holiday mood today,
even though there was work.

Had a good breakfast with special friend.
(even though she no longer gonna be :(

But life goes on.

I'm adapting to the changes.

Watched a movie.

Then some so called snacks.
Chinese dumplings, noodle soup
and dry chili chicken.

Food of love.

I love eating with her.

Came back. Slept for awhile.

Went to a club later at night
with friends. It was crazy.
Girls these days party harder
than the boys.

I was almost raped. :P

Exciting night.

Ended with room service and
more bottles of whiskey.

Drove home in a dazed of
'what just happened'.

Quickly showered, force myself
to post.

And now, to sleep.

What you expect,
it's a godamnholiday!

Day 145: Merry X mas

There's always a reason why you are alone.
Especially in Christmas.
Karma.

I took charge of my karma this year.
I've been alone for almost 5 years.

Not this year.

Am not gonna wait for anyone.
Am gonna go out and have my share
of fun.

Which I did.
I discovered capabilities I never thought
I had. Even though I feel kinda empty
with the result of it. But it definitely beats
being alone at home on Christmas, watching
an AVI.

Things have been decided today.

Eventhough I'm not fully happy or
satisfy with the decision, I'll have to
live with it. Because sometimes it is
not only about what I like, but also
what the other party likes.

No point for me to linger on where
something is no longer there.

I let live, and live.

Today is the day I live as a new.

Learn to love myself more and extra
cautious of who I devour myself too.

Cause when the wind of change comes,
it feels like shit. And it'll take much effort
to recover.

Merry X'mas!

Hope you have a splendid evening where
you love yrself more!

Day 144: Offers New Start

Had an offer for a job today.
Comics related.

It's a dream job that I wished would
have come earlier in my life.

I'm considering deeply.

This means stop film production for awhile.

This also means relocation to overseas have
to put on hold.

I sense choices have to be made in these coming
days before 2011 comes.

I sense change.

Am I ready for it?

Will think thoroughly.

Till tomorrow.

Day 143: Work

Ah... it takes alot of hard work.

But it will pay off.

I'm sure it will.

It's the matter whether you want
to work or not..

Let's work!

Day 142: It's damn hard

It's over.

I can't stand lies.

One after the another.

How many times can I bare it?

I've given my best.

Yet.. I've been lied to.

I really thought this was the one.

But it's wrong again.

How am I to give again.

I've given my best.

Yet, I was lied.

I can't stand lies.

It's damn friggin hard.

How can I trust?

I really want to.

But it's damn hard.

I feel like a pawn.

Ughh... case closed.

Beware of liars!

Day 141: Concentrate and Commitments

Had an early discussion and recce for the
feature film I'm working on.
Guess we got pretty much everything locked
down. Except, the lead guy. Sigh.

It's bloody hard to find a young and decent
actor in Malaysia.

Later at evening went to an old friend's wedding.
Christ, it's the fifth this month.
Getting really fed up of weddings.
I mean, in this century what does marriage
means? Does it mean permanence?
No relationships I realized are permanence.
I see it everywhere. Divorce. Betrayal.
The sudden change of heart.
It's so common.
And heart aching to hear.

So I couldn't help watching the entire process
of weddings with a skeptic perception.

I mean I believe in true love.
But at the same time, I'm fear
of the change of heart.

Oh-what a day.

Was still pretty traumatizing the entire day
waiting for the stats from the other side
of the world.

Anyway, after the wedding, the guys
and the groom had a heart-to-heart talk
over a very good vintage wine.
It was fun catching up sharing perspective
of relationships from different aspects; a recently
married, married and someone who had
just started a relationship. It doesn't look good.

But deep down, I'm always optimistic hoping
to find the One, someone who I can be sure
to make me feel safe, and I give the same.

At this age, frankly, how many can, and are capable
to?

I mean look at the technology and evolution
of human life, we have just too many choices.

So-yeah, what I feel is pretty contradicting.
I know it's screwed, but yet deep down I
want it to be perfect.

But there's no such thing as perfect is there?

Oh-what a day.

*burp.

Day 140: Fiesta Day 2

Not bad day.

Business was abit slow. Guess everyone
ran out of money from day 1.
But overall, I still got to do some portraits.

Really starting to enjoy doing it.
I don't normally do portraits, because I
think it's hard.

But seeing customers getting so happy
with the version that I've portrayed of them,
I felt kinda fulfilling.

Met alot of interesting people today.
Friends I only knew from online came
and meeting them for the very first
time was really memorable. It felt like meeting
a long lost old friend.

Also met one of the big bosses of the company
that I had been working for many years and recently
quit. Eventhough I've worked for the company for
almost 4 years, this was the first time I actually
met him. We shared something in common which was
comics. He was surprised he had a staff he didn't knew
that also liked comics. Will be meeting up with him
next week to discuss some projects.

On the other side of the planet, my special friend
had been stuck in the airport for almost a day
due to snow storm. Was having mixed emotion
during the con while worrying for her.

If the flight had departed, I would have seen
her today.

Sigh.

Anyway, after a long day work, met up with
friends for an awesome Jap dinner and a body
massage.

My whole body feels so relaxed now.

Got another 5 hours to sleep before
waking up to help my friend steal his
bride. Heh.

Miss you special friend, hope yr well
and be back home soon before Christmas.

This post is dedicated to you.

Day 139: Fiesta Day 1

Day 1 of Comic Fiesta @ Times Square.

Crowd was huge. But the hall this year was
pretty small.

Had a very good friend came very early to
support me by being my first customer.
Was really proud to have a friend like
him.

Then later afternoon another friend came
with his friend, claiming to be a big fan
of mine.

They both were very supportive and bought
quite a few sets of my books.

Phil Yeh and Phil Ortiz bids me goodbye.
They are heading back to the US tomorrow.
Phil Yeh said that's he'll try and arrange something
to help me get to San Diego Comic Con someday,
which is one of the dream con that I want to sell
my books at.

I felt really happy with so many support
coming from so many directions.
Especially when I'm at my current doubting
stage.

Their support had energized me.

A very good day indeed.
Let's hope for tomorrow as well.

Day 138: Comic Cons

One comic con after another.
Just prepared for another con in KL tomorrow.
Hope I can sell some books.
Lately, there's where I can earn some money.

Funny, how film production used to support
my life, and art was the additional.
Now art seems to be the only support
to me.

Still pending on a couple of commercial projects.
That's the thing about commercial.
Alot of waiting time.
But once you get it,---KAPOW!

My sleeping time is kinda screwed.
4 hours a day.
And random hours.
Can feel my health deteriorating.
Haven't been exercising.

Gotto keep my health back on track.

Was in a wedding today.
So many weddings this month.
Another one this Monday.
More weddings means more cash out.

The studio's rent is due.
We're still lack of cash to clear up.

Guess this is fun part
of living life as an artist,
living on the edge.

Now let's hope somebody buys
one of our paintings to clear
off some debts.

It's 3am. And I gotto be running
in another 6 hours. Eyes still wide
awake. Don't feel tired at all.
Tomorrow's gonna be fun.

What a joy-joy world this is.

Day 137: Wake up call

Woke up, went and met a director friend.
We talked about work. He is pretty successful.
So taking pointers from him really helped alot.

He made me realized how much I've been slacking.
I should be developing more content.
I'm a creative person, and I haven't been
using my talent to write. I should write more.
Develop stories. Sitting around waiting for
people to offer me directing gigs just doesn't
cut it.

I want to direct feature as my ultimate goal,
but what have I done to achieve it?

Even if my excuse was that I'm busy with
my graphic novel, I haven't even touched
it for a long time. Even I've promised myself
to work on it after coming back from the rave
as research.

Sigh.

Went to a premiere of a telemovie I developed.
I sold the concept to a production house.
Was semi-disappointed at the outcome.
But guess it was okay, the production house
made it work for the malay community.
I guess that is what important. Selling to the mass.
My hopes for it when I wrote it was an attempt
to rise up the taste of the locals.
Guess, I'll never know if my way works better
or worse. Oh-well, atleast I get a cheque out
of the project. Better than nothing.

Later went to the studio to paint.
Started using oil.
Difficult, but fun. I guess.

Drank some JD and chat with artist friend.

I'm so scared of not making it in Jakarta.
But I guess I have to give it a shot.
Local industry just seem too...
I dunno, not prosperous.

Reflecting the outcome of the telemovie
I helped developed, I really think to myself,
are these the stuff I want to be doing?

With such tight budget, no matter how
good the content is, it'll only go as far
as it can go. Or maybe it'll be different
if I've shot it myself.

I remembered the first episode of a show
I directed. It totally awed everyone of
what I could achieve with such tight
budget and restrictions.

As time goes by, my energy to prove
just gone weaker and weaker. Till I don't
even give a damn and just execute.

I need to build that energy back.

But this time, I gotto strategies where
to burn my energy.

I'll start today by writing concepts again.
Maybe make a personal short film.
My director friend did told me that you
could make tons of money even with
short films just by sending it out to competition.
But ofcourse the first rule of making short films
is not to think of making money.

Back when I first started working in production,
I would watch a movie every night and write.

I got to find back that habit again.

-chinyew

Day 136: Talking with Simpsons

Woke up early for a presentation in Raffles KL.

It was great. I shared my story and threw
them the reality of life as an artist. Scared
the hell outta them of how hard it is.

Ended with a hopeful note that there is
a possibility of making it. But it all depends
on your value of 'making it'.

Next speaker was Phil Ortiz, one of the earliest
artist on Simpsons. His talk was motivating.
Sharing the ins and outs of the industry,
and the basic of comic book making.

Last speaker was Phil Yeh, teaching people how
to make money and not to have a proper job.
I respect him for his determination of making
art.

Went back home feeling really sleepy. The night
before only had 2 hours sleep. Reflecting on
what I've learned today. Of what I want. I thought
I knew. Now these days, I'm not too sure.

Slept the entire day.

Calls kept coming in.

Not jobs, but various inquiries.
Glad to be at service.
But where's my money?

Anyway, had some time to do
some reading and watch some
movies.

Muscles was aching.

Preparing a presentation for a college
tomorrow. Presenting along some
great names. Will keep you guys
posted.

Need the 2 hours sleep now.

Day 134: For Sentimental Reasons

I'm back.

The handler to drag the luggage couldn't come out.
So I had to bend my body to drag it. Was very tiring.

Reached back KL on midnight. The moment I touched
down, reality kicks back in. My worries for financial
came back. The trip to Singapore was good detachment.
Wished Malaysia had more jobs for me.

Was talking to artist friend at the mamak
to postmortem the trip. We talked about
the people we meet and respect. And how
much opportunity Singapore gives out to
the art industry. Basically most comic artist
in Singapore survives on freelance illustrations.

Malaysia, simply there aren't oppornunities
like that. Even if there is, the illustrator are
squeezed crazily.

But enough with my rambling. Was really glad
to be back home. Unpacking was tiring.
It's almost time I replace my new luggage
which has followed me to various cons.

I've been saving all the Singapore dollars that
I've been making since last year. I have a random
thought of saving all the money into a fund where
it's gonna get me to a US convention one day.

But my plans for next year are pretty vague,
I'm still not sure if I'll continue to work on
comics or art.

Day 134: For Sentimental Reason

Day 133: Good sales

Day 3, last day STGCC.

Good sales today. I See So Many Butterflies VOL.1
is sold out.

Was pretty satisfied with the sales today.

It was pure fun.

We bids our goodbyes to everyone.
It was great to see everyone again.
At the end of the event is where
all of us catch up, trade books and
talks about the future. The future
of comics to us.

Told some of them that I'll retiring
this year. Gonna concentrate on
my production career. Will stop
comics for awhile.

After all the hard work, the return
is still quite low. I'm pretty satisfy
with the result though, but it just doesn't
cut it enough for me to make a living.

Guess my age is really kicking in.

Packing up, saying goodbye to everyone
was kinda sad. Feeling like it'll be last
time of seeing them.

Met new friends too. Very cool people.
Love their artwork. Saw alot of old friends
have evolved very well too. From publishing,
to their finishing. They all have my full
respect for making it all the way there.

I know it can be very hard to even
to be at STGCC. It takes so much out of
us and yet the returns are so small.

Tomorrow heading back to KL.

Life is good.

Day 132: Slow Sales

Day 2 at STGCC.

Sales are really slow.
Not as happening as it was last year.

When you start charging people for something
which you didn't at first, it might work that
they love it so much they will pay, but most
likely they won't.

People just like free stuff.

The crowd was small and minimal.

My books moved slowly.

But I guess good enough to cover
my cost for the trip and the rental
of the booth.

As for the printing of the books,
and my artist fees, blah, blah,
guess you can say my account
book is definitely a negative.

So why bother?

The love for comics of course!

Sigh.

STGCC is the closest I can fly
to for a comic convention.

Well, love to elaborate more,
but I swear I'm bloody tired
as hell.

Shall sleep now.

Like now.

I miss you special friend.

Aeroline broke the handlers to my bus. They didn't apologize, so I'm filing a complain email to them.

Day 130: Singapore - Day 1

Touched down.

Singapore.

Something happened to my luggage,
where I'm gonna save my time by not
explaining the entire scenario, and just
copy+paste the complain email I wrote
to the bus company:

To whom it may concern.

Upon arriving at border immigration of Singapore, one of your staff members broke
one of the handles of my luggage when he attempted to remove it from
the bus.

Then upon boarding the bus after the immigration, another member of
staff broke another handle when he attempted to put my luggage back
into the bus.

Now my luggage has no handles at all and it is very difficult for me to move it.

Your staff did not apologize and simply gave me a reason stating that my
luggage was too heavy.

My luggage is of high quality and is branded, built for
heavy duty. The only reason I can think of how both staff members could break
both handles is because they did not check the weight of the luggage and
simply just pulled it roughly out of the luggage compartment.

The first break was reasonable and forgivable, but I would assume
for the second time that the staff would have already known that it
was heavy and should have been more attentive upon handling my
luggage.

I only feel that it is reasonable for Aeroline to compensate the
damages to my luggage by replacing an equivalent of the luggage I
have.

This is my first time taking Aeroline buses upon good recommendation
from a friend and was satisfied with the overall services until
the luggage incident.

With this, I hope to receive a satisfactory reply from Aeroline and
looking forward to continue recommendation of your company's services in the
future.

Please do reply with an email where I can forward evidence photos of
the damages to my luggage.
